ABCs ‘The Bachelor’ met Jesus last night… sort of?

Alrighty… another great dose of reality television smothered the world last night with ABCs The Bachelor. I know what you are thinking: Jason watches The Bachelor? And I have to tell you, I don’t. But after hearing a bit of the buzz about Jesus being “shared” last night with Jason Mesnick, (aka The Bachelor), I decided to check it out for myself. [you can too... video link at the end of this post... am I helpful or what?]
Apparently last night’s episode was one of those where the Bachelor visits the families of some of the potential “brides”… fascinating. Naomi, one of the lucky women who has still made the cut, takes Jason to meet her parents, Hector and Joanne.
Hector takes a few minutes to chat with his possible-soon-to-be-son-in-law, Jason, and is actually quite open with him in regard to his faith in Jesus Christ. Hector makes the statement: “When Jesus says he is the way and the truth and the life, I believe that he is the way and the truth and the life.” Hector point-blank asked Jason if he had “much background” in the area of Christian faith to which Jason responded, “No, I don’t.” (My understanding is that Jason is Jewish… Maybe he and Naomi should have chatted a bit about religion before the visit home?) Obviously ABC edited a lot of their discussion… I would have loved to hear all Hector had to share. I commend him for speaking up about his faith, and his concern for his daughter and her potential husband, with the cameras rolling…
What is perhaps even more interesting is the discussion Jason has with Joanne, Naomi’s mom. Wow… she was a trip. Premonitions. Indigo kids. Reincarnation. She has just about all the bases covered…. very fascinating. Jason’s facial expressions during his chats with Naomi’s parents are priceless.
Take a look at the video here >> The Bachelor Feb 10, 2009 << You can only view it through ABCs Episode Player so just follow this link and the instructions they provide. Be sure to stop back by and share your comments. (If you have trouble with that link, as ABC can be challenging at times, you can try clicking here or go to the Bachelor portal on Hulu by clicking here and select The Bachelor: Week 6, Part 2.)
Oh, one more thing: this video segment starts out with a burial ceremony for a dove… like I said, fascinating! Peace.

I actually saw this (not that I am personally a fan of the show, but I was blogging while the wife had it on TV). When this started happening it certainly caught my attention!
I also applaud Hector for sharing his faith like that while the cameras were rolling! That takes some serious courage, because you know that there are lots of people that will be critical of him.
My only thing with stuff like this is how TV portrays people like Hector. I’m not saying that ABC went out of their way to put him in a negative light, but in the end Naomi’s family just came off as being completely whacked out, and Hector ended up just being right in the middle of it. So in the end while I’m glad that Hector did that, I’m not sure that it made a very positive impact.
I’d still like to see Christians protrayed on TV as strong, positive people who make valuable contributions to society (which does happen sometimes in shows like Extreme Makeover Home Edition).
Just my two cents!

Dan,
I get what you are saying… it does seem like tv tends to portray Christ-followers as a bit “whacked out”. I remember having a conversation with a good friend who watched a show that I think is called “Wife Swap” (?) and she was telling us that a family on that show was “Christian” and unfortunately made out to look a bit kooky… but who knows? Maybe they were a bit kooky.
I too would like to see highlighted many of the great contributions that strong, intelligent, passionate Christ-followers are making. Maybe you should go into film production and pull something together…!
Thanks. Peace.
