ABC News on Mark Driscoll… hmmm.

Pastor Dude Mark
Don’t know if you’ve seen this yet but Mark Driscoll appeared on Nightline the other day. Following is the article ABC News has posted on their site.
I have friends and colleagues who love him and others who aren’t so sure about him. My take is that he has some good things to say and he makes you think… He seems quite firm (dogmatic?) in his beliefs and doctrine which can be both a strength and a weakness (easy there… don’t have a heart attack!) Oftentimes our greatest strength can also be our greatest weakness, right?
What I mean is, sometimes he appears so dogmatic that he comes off as “I’ve got this whole God-think figured out… i am right, you are wrong.” He has taken some shots at some other ministers I admire, (like Rob Bell, for example.) Again, that is just the vibe I get at times from what I have read and listened to of Mark.
That is why I really appreciated this quote from the article: “I think, to be honest with you, humility is something that, by God’s grace, I’m learning,” [Mark Driscoll] said. “I would not pretend to be an expert in humility.”
Gotta appreciate his honesty…
I am curious as to your thoughts, my faithful readers… share with me!

Jason, thanks so much for the post. This is a perfect example of the local church and reaching those that are unchurched. Seattle is one of the most difficult areas to reach and Mark is finding a way to do it. This is a testimonial to the local church. I applaud him for that.
I am disheartened when I read that he is bagging on other pastors. We should be sharing our resources to reach those that need it. Just because you are reaching one segment of those that need to find Jesus doesn’t mean that others aren’t.
God is using many people in many different ways. We should be encouraging those that do it like Mark, Rob Bell and the others that are moving people to Jesus, even when we don’t agree with how they are doing it. THEY ARE DOING IT FOR GOD! The have IT.
Let HIM do HIS work through us. It’s ALL GOOD. Thanks again for sharing. Good stuff…

Well I for one love the guy.
Yes I can understand that reading/hearing that he is bagging on other pastors could be a concern; and I do think that there is much that could be considered just plain mean…however…
When we listen/read his comments surrounding the comments we see a genuine spirit in what he is saying. He is not upset that other people are preaching…it’s that they are preaching ideas that are contrary to the Bible. We will be held accountable for what we preach, pastor or not.
I thought it had a few points that were obviously journalistic tactics for increasing buzz but it was great to see. He also had an interview with a local FOX affiliate in Seattle that was done very well. It proves that orthodoxy is still powerful.

Jason, I just discovered your blog. You might see a lot more of me now…sorry. I guess it really depends on how you define orthodoxy. One man’s orthodoxy can be another man’s noose and it almost seems like Driscoll is there to tie the noose with as many fancy knots as possible. I don’t know, I mean, I guess we are supposed to be faithful to our practice, but I think we need to encapsulate the entire Biblical experience and journey if we are going to be faithful to the God who calls us to preach.
Even though I currently work in a relatively large church, I sometimes wonder where we are leaving our disciples we truck along. But I admit, I have a lot to learn.
Grace and Peace
