Obama-bashing?!? Really?

I sincerely believe that there are great days ahead for our nation.  Every president in our nation’s history has made some great decisions and some poor decisions, I am convinced Obama will be no different.  I look forward to seeing what Obama will bring to the presidency and I am praying for him just as I pray for all our nation’s leaders.  That being said, I definitely do not agree with him on several issues.

Interestingly, it seems that Christ-followers have become incredibly divided over Obama to a degree which is, quite honestly, uncomfortable to me.  Some act as if Obama is the trendy, fresh ’savior’ finally bringing about positive change and wrenching power from the hands of war-loving conservatives.  Others view him as a near ‘anti-christ’ and are convinced our nation is headed to ‘hell in  a handbasket‘ now that Obama has taken office.

My concern is that pro-Obama Christ-followers will be so swept away with the ‘hope and change’ mantra that they will see no wrong in Obama’s stance on some key issues.  On the other hand, I think many anti-Obama Christ-followers will dismiss anything positive about Obama and will focus on either bashing him or  ‘ousting’ him come 2012 rather than working cooperatively to bring about Kingdom-centered change.

We have a voice. That is the beauty of living here in the USA.  Our voice did not start or stop when Obama was elected… let’s continue to share, in an uplifting, loving and humble manner, the voice of the Kingdom.

Some seem to believe that if you disagree with Obama on an issue, you are Obama-bashing.  Not true.

I encourage all Christ-followers to learn how you can share your voice on behalf of those who do not have a voice.  Check out the following in regard to being a voice for the unborn.  Perhaps the greatest social justice issue of our time is standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, speaking out on behalf of those who cannot speak themselves, honoring the lives of unborn children.  Some very serious legislation, FOCA, will be considered early in Obama’s term.  We must speak now.

Thoughtful blog. I like where you went with it…that is providing a place for people to get informed and ACT!
I am a 42 yr old registered Republican…with a deep history of voting extremely conservative. However, this election I felt I had to vote outside my party for the first time ever…despite Obama’s pro-choice policy. Not looking for a saviour…I follow Jesus…just looking for forward change in Washington.
Personally…I am tired of the inconsistancy in regards to the concept of the’sanctity of human life’…over-all. This means I am rethinking the ‘just war myth’.
Further, my greatest frustration is the number of people in the church that are vocally pro-life yet do virtually nothing in ‘action’ to fight for that cause. When asked…few actually knew of the local and national organizations to contact for ideas on how to get involved…few had actually donated financially to National Right to Life, Crisis Pregnancy Centers, Catholic Family Serices etc. Virtually no-one had ever walked in a public “right to life” demonstration/walk a-thon…..or donated their time in any manner…this is confusting to me…
I don’t think lip service amongst those who are like minded on this topic…will ever accomplish much of anything.

There has to be a way where we can find a balance between the hope of change that comes with every new administration and the understanding that true change does not come from government or a president, but only occurs through the hands of Christ.

Funny this is the first blog of yours I read…. I wrote a reflection on the Obamaitis that swept the nation earlier this week on my blog site: http://www.30tocure30.com

    Well said,

We have had similar concerns. Our prayer is that the Christian Community comes together and prays for Obama(and all other leaders) as the Word instructs us to(1 Tim 2:1-3) Thanks for sharing this :)

It’s kind of spooky to me how much your post brings back about the initial election of President Bush - but the shoe is on the other foot. I recall conservatives implying (or even outright saying) that Bush was God’s president and that to oppose him on anything was to oppose God! I hope we’re not heading for another round of disillusionment, as many of my friends experienced over the past eight years.

Although coming at it from a different direction from many (but by no means all) Christ-followers, President Obama is opposed to abortion and has plans to help reduce abortion in ways that he believes are more effective than simply trying to outlaw abortion. I pray that he is correct and that he is able to pull this off.

I heartily agree that grass-roots, personal involvement is key to carrying out any task that God has given us. Just as we can’t outsource a right-to-life agenda to the government, we can’t outsource evangelism to the preacher (for example).

    Peace.

    Matt,

I agree with you about the similarity between the reactions of the Christian community to Bush’s election and Obama’s… spooky is a great adjective.

I would love for you to share (or point me in a good direction) as to the “plans to help reduce abortion in ways that he believes are more effective than simply trying to outlaw abortion” Obama has… I have yet to see/hear a perspective on this that wasn’t, IMHO, agenda-driven. Again, this isn’t an anti-Obama comment, just my own experience. I would LOVE to see these plans as the unborn is a major social injustice although it is often overlooked as such.

    Thanks for your insights, brother.

    Peace.

I actually became aware of this when I heard Donald Miller speaking on behalf of Obama on campus here at UNC. The basics of the reducing abortion plan are making health care and day care available and affordable; initiatives promoting better fatherhood; making birth control more available; making adoption easier; and tackling poverty.

I’m not necessarily saying I believe all of these things will be done or will be effective. However, it seems pretty clear that Roe v. Wade isn’t going to be overturned by anything less than a constitutional amendment, and I don’t see that happening. If Obama puts good faith effort into accomplishing these things, which were not a part of Bush’s administration, then it may be that the “pro-choice” guy does more to reduce abortion than the “pro-life” guy did. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than four more years of the same lack of progress.

Here are a couple of links:

http://www.ontheissues.org/Social/Barack_Obama_Abortion.htm (if NOW is attacking Obama for being “anti-choice”…)

Obama also supports the 95-10 Initiative: http://www.democratsforlife.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=48 (again, not saying it will necessarily be possible or effective, but could it be progress?)

    Peace,
    Matt

    Jason,

Thank you for taking the time to write your blog. I know it was not an easy task to do.

I also am worried that because of the economic crisis we are having in our country that people are grasping for straws to make things right. In the process some very important moral, Christian issues are being thrown to the wayside.

We do need to take a stand for these unborn lives. I agree we don’t do this by slamming President Obama, but more by praying that he will have the wisdom directed by God to rule our country. I do pray for the protection of President Obama and his family, and for our great country.

I pray that we will stop taking God “out of our business” and then when the going gets tough cry out and wonder why He isn’t there.

Thank you again for your awesome blog. Great job.

    Blessings,

    Judy
